The course of Medicine for undergraduates at the São Leopoldo Mandic School aims at forming humanized general practitioners prepared to act in the global market and able to attend at primary and secondary levels in the public and private health systems. São Leopoldo Mandic seeks to promote development of a posture of inquisitive studying and continued professional development, which should pave the ground for longitudinal professional survival in a world of globalized economy and knowledge.
The undergraduate course in Medicine presents, therefore, a proposal of revolutionary and avant-garde education, with a modern curriculum and a highly qualified teaching and tutoring team, as well as practical and current evidence-based guidance on health promotion. Teaching strategies used at SLM enable the student to develop the skills needed for professional practice, promote early contact with health system users in multiple learning scenarios and stimulate integration between teaching, research and development.
Part of SLMandic’s method is early exposure to practical situations from the first semester of the course in highly equipped simulation laboratories, which increase student confidence and reduce the risk of errors in real situations at Primary Health Care Units and Hospitals. Additionally, the school strongly encourages research through a Science Initiation program as well as the development of autonomy and critical and reflexive learning.
An example of SLM commitment to practical undergraduate experience is the state-of-the-art robots that simulate patients as a whole, in which HD cameras and audio recording systems are integrated with software to promote detailed and rich discussion of clinical scenarios among students and tutors. The intention is to use the technology of the laboratories and the simulation methodology to integrate the contents of the basic subjects with the clinical specialties, making the course interesting and dynamic to form a student prepared for the challenges of their future working life.
In addition to laboratory technology and simulation methods, SLMandic maintains partnerships with main hospitals in the metropolitan region of Campinas to promote and anticipate student and patient interaction. There are more than 1,600 hospital beds available across the Ouro Verde Hospital Complex, Dr. Mário Gatti Municipal Hospital, Campinas Maternity Hospital, Santa Casa de Santa Bárbara D’Oeste, Santa Casa de Valinhos, Santa Casa de Campinas and Santa Casa de Itatiba.
São Leopoldo Mandic’s quest for excellence in education has awarded it the highest mark (grade 5) by the National Health Council and the Ministry of Education, which approved the undergraduate course in Medicine and placed SLM among the ten best Higher Education Institutions in Brazil, according to the IGC ranking of the Ministry of Education.
